@nano The first way is the American way, which doesn’t make sense. Why is the punctuation included with the quote, when it’s part of the sentence, not the quote.

@nano i think i use the pre-quote dot under like three levels of subversion

like
- it's the correct way to do it, grammatically (under the grammar i subscribe to)
- fuck grammar i do what i like
- nobody does it anymore though. and it's kinda flipped back around to being kinda cute and camp

@nano@social.nano.lgbt I believe the first one is the grammatically correct one (based on what I was taught in school at least), but honestly I've always done the second because it feels more correct, especially when whatever is quoted doesn't actually have a period

@inderix @nano The second one is the grammatically correct option (except when you’re writing dialogue in a story). If the full-stop is part of the quote, then you just put it outside the quote to end your sentence, any other punctuation shouldn’t be included because it’s not part of the quote.

@nano I don’t have a slightest idea which one is correct but no way in hell I’m including the period into a quote

@yassie_j @inderix @nano well, there's a difference between correctness in spirit and actual grammar. it depends on the region (or the region dialect being taught abroad)

@yassie_j @inderix @nano like over here teachers do RP or GAm depending on, well, how old they are basically. we used to do britain but new curricula are american-based

@nano oh for sure. but if you strip the historical happenstance. putting a comma before the end of the quote sounds like a cool typing quirk

@nano the first way is how i was taught in elementary school but i've started switching it depending on the context
